Old San Juan, P.R.

This weekend getaway was a birthday present for yours truly. Patrick stayed with his grandparents and off we went to enjoy beautiful Old San Juan. As we arrived at the airport to catch our flight, I realized I had left our camera at home. Why do we always remember when it's too late to do anything about it?! Well, thank goodness for the iPhone (RIP Steve Jobs).

We stayed at the El Convento, a lovely old hotel located in Old San Juan. We couldn't have picked a better place to stay at. The food and the staff were wonderful.

We had lunch a couple of times at the hotel's El Picoteo Tapas Bar and the food was delicious.

Chicken Croquettes & Serrano Ham
Chicken Breast Skewers
Marinated Vine Ripe Tomatoes
Beef Tenderloin Skewers

We also enjoyed breakfast a couple of times at the hotel's Patio Del Nispero. The courtyard setting is lovely.

The bulk of our visit was spent walking around Old San Juan and visiting the 2 forts that flank the city: Fort San Felipe del Morro and Fort San Cristobal. We also took an evening Bio Bay kayak excursion with Kayaking Puerto Rico. Experiencing "Laguna Grande", the bioluminescent lagoon, was very cool.

On our first night in San Juan, we had dinner at Carli's owned by jazz pianist Carli Munoz. I had the filet mignon and Brian had the ahi tuna. Our food was very good and we had the pleasure of listening to Carli play the piano that night.

Lunch at the Parrot Club was good, and the music was fabulous.

Dinner at Marmalade was a disappointment. The restaurant gets great reviews but we didn't think the food was that good and the portions were small.
