Cat Island, Bahamas

We just came back from a week on Cat Island. We feel completely relaxed and a little bit bummed about Monday (aka back to work) looming.

GETTING THERE: We flew United Airlines Chicago-Nassau non-stop, then flew Sky Bahamas to/from Arthur's Town. We had no problems at all with Sky Bahamas. It was on time. It made a stop at the airport on the south end of Cat Island (New Bight) but we were in and out quickly.
This... I can never get tired of it
She was on our plane going back to Nassau. It was nice to meet her. Love her video:

RENTAL HOUSE: We rented a house called Simplicity on Wilson Bay in Bennett's Harbour (Arthur's Town), located on the northern part of the island. Nice home on a beautiful beach with okay snorkeling. There was one house next to ours but no one was staying there, and Sammy T's Beach Resort was further down the beach. We saw people on that beach perhaps twice. We basically had the bay to ourselves. Loved that. There is free WiFi at the house but it can be spotty. Debby. the lovely caretaker, picked us up from the airport and dropped us off when we were leaving. She also got a few groceries for us. We did carry a small cooler bag and brought some sandwich meats, snacks, etc... There's a grocery store about 10-15 minutes north of the house.

SNORKELING: We went to Cat Island with the best of intentions. We were going to snorkel everywhere! Well that didn't happen. I blame the beach in front of the house. We just wanted to stay at the house. We had to force ourselves to do some sightseeing. We ended up only snorkeling in front of the house. It was okay. The fish we saw: yellowtail, angelfish, parrotfish, sergeant majors, tangs, squirrelfish, etc...

FERNANDEZ BAY VILLAGE: We went there for lunch one day and had a swim on their gorgeous beach.

SHANNA'S COVE: We also had lunch there. It was really good. They have a really nice menu. We missed the opportunity to have dinner there and are kicking ourselves over it.

DINNERS: We went to a couple of Bahamian places for dinner and did takeout at another place twice. For dinner, you have to call ahead to let them you'd like to come. Before 2pm is the preferred time.

DA SMOKE POT: Cool place. Very good food. The bugs are a killer. Spray yourself and bring that spray bottle with you!

THE HOT SPOT: Food was good too! Apparently they have Karaoke nights there. We didn't stay to experience that.

THAT BAR: On our way to the house from Fernandez Bay, we drove by a very cool looking bar by the water. We stopped for drinks and chatted with the 77-year-old owner and his friend. We just loved it.

THE PEOPLE: Just lovely. Everyone we encountered was so nice and helpful.

AROUND THE ISLAND: We drove to both ends of the island on different days (it took an hour to get to the south!).

RENTAL CAR: We rented with Danny King. The owner of the house put us in touch with him. I don't think one needs a car on CI for an entire week but we prefer to do that because we like the flexibility of doing whatever we want whenever we want. So we got the car for the entire week. $65/day.

WEATHER/WATER TEMP: It was HOT! And the water temp felt like bath water! It rained almost every day but never all day so we never had a day ruined by the rain. I am not sure I can handle going to the islands in July/August anymore though. I'd get a headache when we were out and I think it was because of the heat. Brian is so surprised I now feel this way. I LOVE the islands and I spent 17 years in central Africa.

BUGS: Sigh... just brutal. I used OFF a lot but I still got bit by mosquitoes. They love me. And the hot weather brings more bugs out than usual. They bugged me around the house (no pun intended). Brian keeps saying he can't believe how much I hate bugs considering my time in Africa. I'm 45 now. I think I'm just getting pickier and more difficult with old age!

Cat Island is definitely one of those islands for folks looking for solitude and total relaxation. Overall, it was another great trip. We are thankful we can travel to other countries and meet wonderful/welcoming people. #ItsBetterInTheBahamas
