Key West, FL

We had talked about going to Key West for ages. We finally decided to make the trip during the long Columbus Day weekend. We flew to Miami on a Friday and rented a convertible for the 3 1/2-hour drive on U.S. 1 to Key West. We thought the drive would be very pretty but it turned out to be a bit of a disappointment. Several years ago, we did the breathtaking drive along the California coast. We thought it would be somewhat similar but it didn't come close in terms of a beautiful scenic drive. Oh well. Whenever we go back, we'll just fly into Key West. Nonetheless, this was a great weekend getaway.

We stayed at the Ocean Key Resort & Spa. It's a really nice resort on one end of the famed Duval Street. The hotel is right on the water but doesn't actually have a beach. It has a pier with a bar/restaurant called Sunset Pier where one can enjoy lunch/dinner and the sunset.

On our first night, we had a dinner at the resort's Sunset Pier. The sunset was spectacular and the food was pretty good.

The resort has another restaurant called Hot Tin Roof where they serve breakfast and dinner. The food there was top notch. While enjoying dinner on Saturday evening, there was a wedding going on. Ahhhhh love.

The HIGHLIGHT of our trip was the Dolphin Watch Tour. We used Dolphin Watch which we'd highly recommend to anyone. They won't take more than 6 people on a tour (there were 5 of us on this one) so it feels like a really personal experience and the captain (Rob) was a great guy. We saw a LOT of dolphins, lucky us. We also made a snorkeling stop and saw for the very first time a porcupine fish. How cool.

After our dolphin watch tour, we stopped for lunch at the Waterfront Brewery.

Gotta do the touristy thing, right? We walked Duval street, took a trolley tour, visited the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum and stopped by the southernmost point buoy.

Why are you making me stand next to the Cat Cemetery?!

Dinner on our last night was at Latitudes restaurant located on nearby Sunset Key. It is  recommended for a very special dinner. You have to catch a ferry from the dock behind the Westin hotel for the short ride over. It was a lovely experience.
